How to Soundproof an Existing Floor

Soundproofing a Floor, as part of a Refurbishment Project

Meeting the soundproofing demands of an existing development can be extremely challenging.

Refurbishment timber floors typically lack mass, resulting in issues with meeting the airborne and impact performance values required to achieve Building Regulations. Refurbishment concrete floors may not feature any acoustic treatment resulting in issues with airborne noise. In many cases the lack of clarity on the buildings type of construction is also a potential stumbling block when working with existing properties.

Performance Requirements

The “change of use” acoustic performance ratings must be met in order to meet the demands of Part E Building Regulations.

Refurbishment Timber Floors

A suitable method of meeting Part E Building Regulations on Refurbishment timber floors often involves a combination of the following acoustic treatments:

  • Acoustic floor panels laid on the sub-deck will provide the necessary barrier for impact noise
  • Acoustic flanking strips installed around the floor perimeter to prevent acoustic failure
  • Soundproofing wool between the timber joists is effective at reducing the transmission of airborne noise.
  • Resilient bars fixed below the timber joists decouple the floor from the ceiling, reducing the transmission of vibrations through the floor.
  • Acoustic plasterpanels are then fixed below the resilient bars

Refurbishment Concrete Floors

Meeting the demands of Building Regulations when soundproofing an existing concrete floor requires fewer components than a timber floor. This is because the mass of a concrete floor is able to deal with the impact noise, unlike a timber floor construction. The following combination of products is often suitable for this application:
